Neither a realist nor an abstractionist, I live—as a painter—in a space between. Introduced to watercolor by my grandmother who took me on painting excursions as a child, I developed over time a fascination with color, texture, and lines—visual abstractions that found early expression in my weaving, batik, furniture design, and even the architectural plans for our owner-built home in Pomfret, Connecticut where my husband and I have lived for more than forty years.
But it is light – whether bouncing around up close or reverberating on a distant horizon – that interests me most. When light is at play, I can get absorbed in the smallest corners of a room or the expanse of an ocean as it meets the evening sky.
Ultimately, I paint in order to express my sense of awe at the world – both natural and structural - while grounding myself in the subtleties of light and dark and color harmony. All of this allows me to settle into a sense of peace with the world around me. I seek this balance for myself and I hope to instill this in others as they settle into their own interpretations of my work.
